As the temperature gets colder we tend to gravitate towards more neutrals and earth tones in our wardrobe. Navy, gray, black & brown are often dominant colors in the sweaters, pants and coats we wear around this time of year.  Most neutrals go well with each other but there's a famous neutral pairing that's been known to be fashion taboo for ages....black & brown.

In the outdated fashion hand book "don’t wear black & brown together" is listed right after "no wearing white after Labor Day" (I addressed this fashion myth here).
Wearing black & brown together will not get you pulled over by the fashion police and as a matter of fact, can look quite chic when you pair them together.

It's surprisingly easy to master this look by following the tips below:

  • Throw a pop of color in so that the neutrals (black & brown) aren't the focus. I followed this rule in the pictures with a bright purple skirt.

  • Stick to one color then add 1 item of the alternate color. Example- wear all black with brown purse or all brown with a black purse.

  • Mixing dark brown & black is hardest to pull off so stick with medium to light brown when wearing with black if you’re hesitant. The contrast with these shades of brown gives a better overall look.

  • Wear an item with both black and brown to tie the colors together. Cheetah or leopard print is a good idea for this tip. Animal print accessories are a hot trend right now so try a scarf, pair of shoes or a purse.

Fashion is your time to be creative and try new things, so venture out & break this outdated fashion rule & mix things up. What's your take on mixing black & brown? Let me know in the comments.
