One of the most frequently asked questions I get regarding style is about pairing together colorful clothes and accessories without going overboard and still “matching”. Whether its clothes or jewelry, there’s always a gray area when it comes to finding the right clothes to go with a red necklace or the right color shoes to wear with a bright blue dress. The basic question people want to know is what can I wear with “this”? And “this” is usually a colorful item of clothing or piece of jewelry. Once upon a time matching exact colors in your wardrobe was the thing to do but now that brighter colors and color blocking have become stylish, sticking with one color for your outfit has become a thing of the past.

If you have ever wondered how to colorfully match up the clothes and accessories in your closet, this post will be your guide.

I touched on this subject briefly in this previous post, but here is a more in depth look into matching colors together in your wardrobe.

When it comes to pairing colors the color wheel is your biggest wardrobe tool. Though it is often associated with painting, many are unaware that the color wheel can be essential with helping you create outfits.
There are two basic ways to mix colors from the color wheel:

Pair Analogous Colors: These are colors from the same family & next to each other on the color wheel. Analogous colors are usually in groups of three; pick any color and the colors on its right and left together make analogous colors. In my outfit above this is shown by wearing the colors purple and blue. Pairing these colors together is easier to pull off because the shades are so similar. So, if your style is more reserved or you are not into bright combinations, try this technique for achieving a subtle colorful look.

Pair Complementary colors: These colors are any two colors lying opposite (or 90 degrees to each other) on the color wheel. These colors create a very high contrast and it’s much harder to pull this off, but for the fashion risk takers, there are some pictures below to follow as an example. Using these colors is for the more adventurous fashionista. Since these colors are not in the same family, it can take a little bit more effort to pull a polished look together. Don’t forget about your neutrals which can always help to “tone down” a complementary color look. Mixing neutral colors like white, black, brown, navy blue & of course denim can break up the color pattern and make the look easier on the eyes.
