Skirts are a powerful wardrobe piece. The  ultimate gem of feminine style, they  have the ability to make you legs look a mile long, cover up an unwanted midsection or give the illusion of a slimmer bottom half;  but only if you choose the style that suits your body best. As a self proclaimed skirt addict of all varied colors, shapes, sizes and  lengths,  I’ve realized I have a few favorites not because of the cute details or perfect color, but because they flatter my figure in the best way possible.

I found this Rachel Roy pencil skirt at Macy's recently & realized it’s not only perfect for fall but the best cut for my shape.  As a fashion optimist I’m convinced that most wardrobe flops are not a result of bad clothing choices but simply the result of not knowing how to dress your particular body type. In a perfect world with endless ice cream (with no consequences) & free designer clothes everyone would look great in everything; but the reality is that unless you have the perfect body, some silhouettes fit each one of us perfectly & some don’t do our shapes any justice at all.

The goal with dressing for your body shape is to show off your best features. I talked about that more here. My first post ever was the jean guide- the best jeans for your body type so being the skirt lover I am, a post on flattering skirts for your body type is long overdue. Keep in mind wearing whatever shape or clothing that makes you feel confident is automatic, but just in case you wanted to know what looks best on you, read the list below.

The four most common body types are Pear, Rectangle, Hourglass & Apple.  Don’t forget that body type does not equal size. There are plus sizes and petites of each body type from rectangle to hourglass.

If you’re a Pear (hips are the widest part of your body) you look fantastic in A-line skirts.

  • An a line skirt is a skirt thats shaped like a the letter A, small on the top but full on the bottom. An A-line skirt highlights the smallest part of your waist, and flares out over hips, minimizing the width of your bottom half. Making  your proportions seem equal on the top and bottom.

If you’re an Hourglass (curvy, with a well-defined waist) you look fantastic in pencil skirts.

  • A pencil skirt accentuates your curves, smoothing out thighs. Normally pencil skirts have a high waist which  will ensure your small waist is the center of attention. Pencil skirts are often seen as professional wear but as seen with my denim pencil skirt they can be found in many casual styles.

If you’re a Rectangle (waist, hip, and shoulders are all about the same width), you look fantastic in  mini skirts or a flared skirt

  • A form-fitting 'mini' skirt will emphasize any curves you do have, and the short hemline will show off your slim legs.A flared skirt with give the illusion of curves and Any skirt with pleats around the waist or a busy pattern will do the same.

If you’re an Apple (slim lower body, carry weight around your middle) you look fantastic in high-waisted flouncy skirts.

  • The waistband will hit at the smallest part of the torso and flare out over the stomach, hiding the mid-section. Lastly, the short hemline will show off slender legs. A line skirts are often a great choice for the Apple shape (see above).
